Nursing on Nantucket

Though I do rent cribs, highchairs and tons of other baby equipment to Nantucket vacationers; I unfortunately, do not rent breast pumps.

If you are vacationing on Nantucket and your breast pump goes awry, turn to Dan’s Pharmacy .  They have a large selection of tubing, valves, pumps and other Medela accessories in the lower level of their store on Pleasant Street. Dan’s Pharmacy is really the only place with a very wide selection for purchasing breastfeeding supplies.

If you run into a hitch, maybe you suspect mastitis and can’t reach your regular doctor, turn to Certified Lactation Consultant Amber Hinds.

Our Local La Leche League also meets the first Thursday of every month at 9:30 A.M. in the Unitarian Church at 10 Orange Street. Meetings are led by Rachel Dixon, Sunny Daily or Amber Hinds. I made the choice to nurse my two children, but it was a very difficult road for me. I found great support from Sunny and the other mothers I met at La Leche League meetings. If you can’t make a meeting on Nantucket, look up your local league. If you are a nursing mother it is a great place to meet others who share your parenting style.

Nursing Bras on Nantucket

Ok, so I acknowledge that you all live in “America,” as we here on The Rock so fondly refer to the shores 30 miles to our west.

So you probably think I am crazy talking about this, but on Nantucket – sometimes things are hard to come by – like nursing bras.

I fully anticipate that you will pack all your skivvies, but in the event that a clasp breaks or someone throws your bra in the dryer…rest assured – there is one place on Nantucket to buy nursing bras. Ladybird Lingerie. Right downtown facing the Nantucket Bank on Orange Street. You’ll have to ask for them when you go in though – they are in a secret compartment. Other stores may have them now, but at the time that I needed them, this was the only place.
