Fire Department Tour

The Fire Department is a great place to visit on a rainy day – or sunny day too. If it isn’t a busy time the Firefighters are happy to show you around the barn and let the kids touch the giant trucks. The fire station is located next to the Stop and Shop on Pleasant Street – you can’t miss it.

If you see this guy say, “Hi!” He most likely was the one who installed your crib to my specific and very high standards.

I take a trip there every year with my daycare kids on September 11th for the memorial service. Although it is a very solemn service my kids are all smiles.

Whaling Museum and Kids

The Whaling Museum is my number one favorite thing to do with my kids when it is raining.

Photo from NHA website.

The reason I like the Whaling Museum so much is they have a kids room, where kids of any age can be free. There are many educational activities if you have a little precocious one, or tiny ones can simply walk around or ready books in the cozy barrel in the corner.

Kids can touch anything in the room and the items are geared toward children. It is a diamond in the rough on a cloudy vacation day.

In fact – all of the Historical Association properties are great to visit on a rainy day – you can view all of the properties here.

Beach Combing

Say it rains all day and you don’t want to spend the day at the beach, but you still have an itch to get in some beach combing. It doesn’t have to be sunny to find cool things on the beach. We usually take an evening drive on the beach, and sometimes can spot treasures from the passenger seat.

After 10 years of living here, I was shocked when my step-daughter came across a sand dollar, and then another. We found them on the South Shore in the vicinity of Fisherman’s Beach (the parking lot is marked off Nonantum Ave.). You’d be amazed what you can find if you just keep your eyes peeled. Mermaid Toenails, skate eggs, crab shells, whelk shells are the easy things to find, but don’t get discouraged! If it is a rainy day – it could even be a plus, interesting things can wash up after a storm. One rainy day on Coatue we found a survival kit complete with inflatable life raft and hard tack.

If it is a sunny day, consider renting one of my metal detectors, they are fun for all ages! Any beach is good for beach combing, the South Shore beaches and Great Point are my favorites. I love the big waves of the open ocean and the ever changing shells that wash ashore.

If you need help identifying any of your loot, check with the Maria Mitchell Association, they have a great “Field Guide to Nantucket” I highly recommend. It can be purchased at any of their properties.

Island Variety

Island Variety is where I buy everything that is cool.  They have a great selection of beach toys and sunscreen – not to mention a variety of EVERYTHING.  If you are hosting a party you can count on Island Variety to have party favors and balloons.  Plus, Tony and Bill are my neighbors and have the cutest dog Beau,  he is occasionally at the store.   Say hi to them for me.

There are tons of kids toys and games too.  A hit on a rainy day!!!

You can find them at 5 Freedom Square 508-228-6883.
