“Walking Nantucket” by Peter Brace

There are tons of books about Nantucket, but none have such thorough information about where to walk as “Walking Nantucket:  A Walker’s Guide to Exploring Nantucket on Foot” by Peter Brace.  Peter has put this book together with maps of walks, sketches of wildlife and flora/fauna you may see and a rating system for each walk so you know if it may be appropriate for you and your family.

You can see his Facebook Page for the book for more information.  It can be purchased online through Bookworks if you wish to preview it before your arrival. I have this book on the dashboard of my car and it is so well loved even my kids look through it and look for their favorites.

I just learned he is doing the final proofing his second book Nantucket: A Natural History Very exciting! Like his books on Facebook!

Take your Nantucket Rental Equipment for a stroll on one of Peter’s fabulous walks.

Maria Mitchell and Kids

Before you even unpack and get ready for the beach you need to head over to the and purchase “A Field Guide to the Marine Life of Nantucket.” If your kids ask near as many questions as mine -this guide is as necessary as beach towels. It is lightweight and full of pictures cataloging anything you may come across at the beach, and even things you may hope to avoid.

The has several different properties: the Observatory, Aquarium, Science Museum and the Mitchell House. The best of these to visit with kids is definitely the aquarium.

The Aquarium is tiny, but packed with adventure. You can most certainly pick up your field guide there. The Aquarium is located across from the Town Parking lot – next to the Town Peer. The sign is small, so it is easy to miss. Your best bet is to park in the Town Lot and just walk across the street. My daycare kids love going to the Aquarium because it is what I call a “touching turn” most of the time they have to just have “watching turns.” There is a touch tank with all sorts of sturdy and safe critters that are up for fondling.
After the kids are done at the touch tank they can look at the diverse range of fish that the Aquarium finds in the waters that touch Nantucket’s Shores. The staff is knowledgeable and are uber friendly and great with kids.

The Science Museum is also great fun with kids. The parking is once again tricky, but there is usually space somewhere close on Vestal. This is an awesome place to go with kids on a rainy Nantucket day. If your kids are into seeing nature up close, this is for them. There are tons of specimens of moths, birds, snakes and spiders (all under lock and key – don’t fret).

I don’t know the observatory so well, but if you are renting a crib from me I can only assume your kids are like mine, quite small and asleep before stars become available to gaze. Here is the at the observatory if you can leave the younger ones at home and make a break for it!

Walking with Kids on Nantucket

Two of the best places to walk on Nantucket with kids are Squam Swamp and the Gardner Property.  When I am not too busy in the summer renting baby equipment we try to make it to these two spots at least weekly.

Squam Swamp is always quiet and there are roots bursting forth from the earth making magical patters and there are many fun bridges to cross. I think there are 54 place markers so you always know where you are, though if you have walkers under the age of three I would suggest turning back before the number 20. The most fun day I can imagine on Nantucket would be to pack a lunch and head out about 10 AM. Drive out to Squam Swamp by way of Polpis Road to the Wauwinet Road. Near the end of the Wauwinet Road you will see a 30MPH sign and almost immediately after a parking lot on the right. Park and walk to your hearts content. If you are walking with kids under three I would suggest some sort of Ergo baby carrier you can wear on your back so you can be sure of your footing. This is not really a walk to do with a stroller and even though the jogging strollers I rent are great, they are not up to the task of a forest march. If you feel the need to stroll then check out the Gardner property.

The Gardner property can be found after Sandole’s fish market at 167 Hummock Pond Road. After you pass the market (which you should be sure to visit on your way back into town – they are unbelievable) look for the parking lot on your right. Park and walk. One of my favorite places on Nantucket to take my kids, no matter the weather,  is the cool hidden bridge. For starters it isn’t really hidden, just follow the path and stay to the left when you get to the clearing. TAKE YOUR CAMERA. The bridge is a perfect setting to capture an image for your family holiday card. This walk is good for all ages and is stroller accessible. Call me at the office if you get stuck!
