Capture your vacation with Candids

My friend Laurie Richards of Pixel perfect captured all of the fabulous images for my website.  I chose her as the photographer because of her ease with her subjects and the amazing results. My hopes for my site were to have my potential clients see my children using all of the Nantucket Cribs actual rental equipment. I wanted to showcase the actual size of my full-sized rental crib, the cleanliness of my highchairs and how perfect my kids looked using it.

My parents are professional photographers in Minneapolis and I grew up saturated in the industry.  Over the years I have developed my own opinion about photography and what makes it good to me.   I think photography that captures people as a true representation of themselves is true photography.  Laurie does just that.

is her website and there is just a sampling of her wonderful work. When you are on your Nantucket vacation consider having her join you at the beach to help you document your wonderful times here. The time passes so quickly. My baby is turning four in eighteen days, and I can’t believe how fast the time has passed. Don’t forget a moment of it, have the images to look upon and remember fondly.

Nantucket, Kids and the 4th of July

To start the day, we usually enjoy the water fight in town. You won’t see me – I attend in camouflage due to the fact that my husband (and Nantucket Cribs super cute delivery boy) works at the Fire Department and all the guys think it is really funny to super soak us. Word of warning – you WILL get wet, babies don’t like this. If you do go into town and you have kids under 4 or so, stay WAY WAY WAY back and you will be fine. The corner up by Mitchell’s Bookstore is a pretty good place to stand where you will only be hit with a few wayward drops. The really fun stuff for the kids happens before the water fight. Main Street is blocked off and there are pie eating contests (done by age and at specific times, so sign up early), face painting, flag waving and hordes of people!!!

We are ninnies and never do the Nantucket thing on the 4th. We have gotten into the habit of going to Brant Point. We head down about 7 with a bottle of wine and the kids play on the beach while we relax. Fireworks generally start around 9, but don’t psych up the kids before 8…every year, without fail the day begins beautiful and clear, and inevitably the fog rolls over the grey lady in the early evening. You can see the fireworks fine from here, but my kids are easily impressed (and don’t know any better).

If you are in it for the long haul, head to the Jetties beach.  You can spend a whole day there.  There is a bathroom, a play structure, a concession stand – and best of all FIREWORKS (which I swear are more often than not fogged out).

Walking with Kids on Nantucket

Two of the best places to walk on Nantucket with kids are Squam Swamp and the Gardner Property.  When I am not too busy in the summer renting baby equipment we try to make it to these two spots at least weekly.

Squam Swamp is always quiet and there are roots bursting forth from the earth making magical patters and there are many fun bridges to cross. I think there are 54 place markers so you always know where you are, though if you have walkers under the age of three I would suggest turning back before the number 20. The most fun day I can imagine on Nantucket would be to pack a lunch and head out about 10 AM. Drive out to Squam Swamp by way of Polpis Road to the Wauwinet Road. Near the end of the Wauwinet Road you will see a 30MPH sign and almost immediately after a parking lot on the right. Park and walk to your hearts content. If you are walking with kids under three I would suggest some sort of Ergo baby carrier you can wear on your back so you can be sure of your footing. This is not really a walk to do with a stroller and even though the jogging strollers I rent are great, they are not up to the task of a forest march. If you feel the need to stroll then check out the Gardner property.

The Gardner property can be found after Sandole’s fish market at 167 Hummock Pond Road. After you pass the market (which you should be sure to visit on your way back into town – they are unbelievable) look for the parking lot on your right. Park and walk. One of my favorite places on Nantucket to take my kids, no matter the weather,  is the cool hidden bridge. For starters it isn’t really hidden, just follow the path and stay to the left when you get to the clearing. TAKE YOUR CAMERA. The bridge is a perfect setting to capture an image for your family holiday card. This walk is good for all ages and is stroller accessible. Call me at the office if you get stuck!

Crib Recalls and Your Rental

As I am sure you have heard, there has been a nationwide crib recall involving many drop-side rail cribs. If you have one of these in your nursery be sure it is on the safe list. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20008769-10391704.html
All Nantucket Cribs equipment is checked thoroughly for safety. Though, none of our cribs were recalled, all of our drop-side rail cribs have been replaced with fixed side rails for the 2011 Season.

The Best Nantucket Beaches to Visit With Kids

This is kind of a no-brainer since there is a beach called Children’s Beach, but I am going to post about it anyway – since there are a few beaches off the beaten path which I do frequent with my kids. In a land where all roads lead to a beach, it makes sense to have some opinions as to which ones are best to visit with little ones.

First, I love Children’s Beach.  There is a lifeguard, bathroom, concession stand and huge play structure.  Not to mention the sun, sand and tons of other kids.  This is a harbor beach so there are no waves and the water is warm by the 4th of July.

If I want to get away from the hullabaloo of town, you’ll find me and the family at Pocomo (all the way at the end of Pocomo Road). The water is shallow and seems to always be warmer there than anywhere on island. The parking area is close to the beach so you don’t have to lug your petite travelers all over tarnation. It is quiet and serene.

Pocomo Beach

Driving on the beach is always a fun adventure. If you have a car with 4WD and a beach sticker to drive out to 40th Pole. You can buy a beach sticker at the Police Department on Fairgrounds road – I think they are $150. When you purchase the sticker you will receive a map of all the beaches you can drive on. Don’t forget to let the air out of your tires – down to a minimum of 15 psi. Pack your car full of fun and head out. A word to the wise – don’t take your rental Pack and Play onto the beach. I do carry some older Pack and Play’s that I reserve just for beach going – ask me about one of those if you intend to have your kids nap at the beach.

Have older kids who want to body surf? Head to Surfside – there is a concession stand there, though the walk to the beach leaves me winded.

Have older kids who want to surf surf? Head to end of the road Cisco – there is usually a surf school in progress. Get there early and you can pretty much park at the beach.

Don’t forget that beach toys are a complementary part of your order with Nantucket Cribs, your number one contact on Nantucket. We do more than just Nantucket baby rentals – we try to help you outfit your whole vacation. If there is something for the beach that you need, but can’t find check out Island Variety at 5 Freedom Square.
